Police say crime has dropped significantly in Connecticut’s largest city of Bridgeport, population 149,000, with all “Tier 1” serious crimes dropping an average of 33% in the first half of 2025 compared to the first half of 2024.
It’s also the lowest number of serious crimes committed in the Park City for at least the past five years, police say.
In a recent social media post, Bridgeport Police note that – in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024 – murder dropped 60%, robbery dropped 47%, sexual assault dropped 31%, aggravated assault dropped 28%, motor vehicle theft dropped 23%, and burglaries dropped 10%.
Serious Tier 1 crimes in Bridgeport have also dropped significantly so far this year compared to any time since 2020, and motor vehicle thefts in Bridgeport have dropped nearly in half since 2020 and 2021, when America was in the midst of a motor vehicle theft craze, driven in part by popular Tik Tok videos which showed people how to easily steal Hyundai and Kia cars without engine immobilizer technology.
“The continued drop in crime in Bridgeport is a testament to the hard work of our law enforcement officers and the strength of our community partnerships,” said Sen. Herron Gaston, D-Bridgeport. “This is more than just a statistic, it’s a reflection of a city that’s growing safer, stronger, and more united. I’ve always believed that Bridgeport is a thriving community, full of potential and promise, and this progress reinforces that belief. We will keep pushing forward to ensure every resident feels safe, supported, and proud to call Bridgeport home.”
Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter told Patch that not only are violent crimes down, but that fatal traffic accidents are down 87% and fatal shooting incidents are down 60% .
“This progress is the result of strategic policing, increased community engagement and the dedicated efforts of our officers,” Chief Porter told Patch. “We remain committed to proactive policing and building trust throughout our neighborhoods.”
The drop in crime in Connecticut and across America comes at a bad time for Republicans, who claim that crime is on the rise and needs to drop. A poll last month by Quinnipiac University found that, nationally, Republicans ranked crime as their most important concern, behind immigration, the economy and international conflicts; Republicans even ranked crime as a more pressing issue in America than health care, abortion, preserving democracy, climate change, or racial inequality.
But as the police chiefs of the 68 largest cities in America, from Albuquerque to Wichita, said, crime in America is down substantially, with murders dropping 20% over the past year, robbery dropping 20%, rape dropping 14%, and aggravated assault dropping 11%.
